Here is a story some guy posted on a moog board.  He claimed to know a lot about the rentals.  Whether its true or not is a mystery, but I figure I'll post it anyway.

"True stories of the Rentals...

Tom Grimly really should get TONS of credit for his production on the first Rentals LP, putting together a good band that was the first line up with people like Petra Haden AND turning Matt on to Moog syntheisizers.

Matt's original idea was for the Rentals to be more guitar based and he asked Tom Grimly to help him with the demos he had been working on. Tom was a cool local engineer that funded his studio doing slave labor by working on the second Tone Loc record. He would record tons of local LA bands in the early 90's such as Slug, Pressurehead, Geraldean Fibbers, that dog, and even Beck. His studio was called Poop Alley. After the first Weezer record hit Matt was eager to put out his own songs out and contacted Tom.

Short story is Tom really crafted that first album. Matt takes all the credit with all the "Weezer Power" and squeezes Tom out of the picture on the next recording(maybe that's why the second was so week)."

skewed interpretation, but more or less the same facts as Tom Grimley's bio on this site.
