I have been working on this and thought i'd get the opinions of my peers.  It's going to be an 11x17 inch poster, most likely that I will just keep to myself or give to friends, but I was wondering if there is anything that could enhance the layout.  I did the illustration using ...well,  illustrator.  It's based on an older photo that was actually a Weezer promo, maybe predating the Rentals slightly.   Anyway, I'm not begging for insults, I can do that myself.  Just suggestions.  I realize the image doesn't exactly represent The Rentals as a band, but I'm going more for visual interest than full representation.

Thanks.

i would suggest something uplifting in the background of the first one. It cool, but seems very dark and deathy.  Maybe stars, explosions or really small source pictures to add happiness.
The second one makes me hungry for McDonalds

I actually like the expression, it reminded me of the very sullen look he has on the cover of RotR, and I wanted to stray away from the more well-known shots of his face.  I will try adding some stuff or changing the colors to stray away from the depressing feel it kind of has now (even though I feel that "depressing" isn't totally off when you get into a lot of Matt's lyrics, even Rental's stuff.)

The Rentals always had mixed signals, for me, so I was kind of going for that.  It's a little sarcastic, but never condescending, and always colorful, with way too much going on all at once to ever allow you to pin it down.

i really liked the yellow/pink one. the only suggestion i have is to make the lines on the top (the strings i guess?) longer, it just seems kind of awkward with his head so close to the top border. i think it looks great.

PS did you design that site that was linked on the pictures yourself?

Pink and yellow can do no wrong, just look how well it worked for the Exploding Hearts (rip).  Hmmm, that makes it sound like a color combination killed them...

Yeah that's my website (Thanophonic.com), but it's kind of not finished yet, when my finals are over I'll have some time to get everything going...thanks for looking at it.

I could easily get them digitally printed, on decent heavy paper. I work for an ad agency, so it wouldn't be difficult.  Silkscreening a poster would be great but, for a one-off, is pointless.  At least for me, I do screen stuff, but it's too costly to just do small runs.  I've been meaning to screen myself a rentals tee shirt for a long time, I was planning on wearing it to a Weezer show, but that means I would have to pay to see Weezer...

(I'm not trying to be one of those 'i hate weezer' people, I just feel that Rivers is an entirely different person than he was years ago when he produced the two albums that so many people will remember him for, so new Weezer and old Weezer aren't even really comparable, Rivers himself knows that.)

But anyway, if any of you guys want a digitally printed 11x17 poster of one of these designs, I could get one out to you.  I would just charge for materials since it is a trademark and all, and I made the design out of love and constantly promote the band to everyone I know...so I don't think there would be any problem.
