Is there any way I can find out if it worked without pestering Patrick?

agreed. i just registered and there was no confirmation email or even something that poped up and said "yay you joined". just a suggestion

       Thanks for signing up and all the suggestions.  We are implementing a confirmation system in the next few days. The warm up tour went great!!  I have put up a new objective; check it out when you get a chance.
