How was Mates of State?

I saw Treasure Mammal on Saturday, and it was incredibly fun.
I recommend it, specially if you enjoy dancing.

mates of state was mates of state.
good show to see, they played a few new songs and had some additional
accompaniment in terms of a violin player for some songs.
and treasure mammal? i'll look them up.

but I got to see calamity magnet when they went through austin.
household names opened but i missed most of their songs.
second opening band was
hollywood gossip, a morrissey sounding poppy band.
here's the thing though. halfway through alot of the songs
they changed the beat dramatically. it was strange, but
it held my attention, and i genuinely liked them.
especially the bass the girl was playing.
she had this rocket bass guitar.
if you look up super kicky awesome in the dictionary there's a picture
of this right next to it.
after that built by snow played. one of the guys actually handed out
some samplers of their music during the last rentals tour
since it has a close general sound to them.
so i've been wanting to see them for awhile
and wanted to see them when they released their ep awhile back
but never got to. so this was a treat. btw: their free ep
high energy, super pop. it was as if weezer and ozma had a baby.
which is funny because i've always thought of ozma as
if weezer and the rentals were having a baby. so take that for what it is.

they were great though.
and then calamity magnet came up, i was expecting
more a country angled sounding rock but it
was more a rock angled sound with a dash of country and some bluesy sounding
guitar from their lead guitar joe.
they had a nice little rhodes piano too.
it was nice to hear them live, i haven't listened
to the ep yet, but the show was great and to me
it sounded alot better than the stuff that i've been listening
to on their myspace page.
they also covered tom petty's american girl as an encore.
i figure if you have the guys working at emos singing along
you must be doing something right. it was nice talking to sara too.
I hope her and the band have a good rest of the tour.
Smiley

and last night i got out to see tilly and the wall.
to me it was pretty slow getting the crowd into it.
but after three or four songs people started syncing with the band.
personally i think it's the venue. (the granada in dallas)
fishboy played with another band the om nom noms?
i caught the last two songs of them, which sucks that i missed it.
for some reason the granada start shows pretty early.
previously i saw fishboy and was pretty happy about the show.
but i didn't get to miss man factory and their street fighter opera.
i'm not sure how you can make that combination seem so boring,
but it was a dull show. neither homoerotic nor kick ass.
but tilly and the wall played some newer stuff. some old songs.
i still think the first time i saw them as being totally awesome.
but either the unfamiliarity of the new songs or the pace kind of
ranked it below from last time. or maybe it's the venue.
the granada is a fancy place and kinda feels like its catered to the kids.
hahah. there was never a line to the bar. guess that's a good thing.
back when the gypsy tea room was around i thought that was kick ass.
but i was told it was changed to a christian rock venue.
so maybe i need to just get out to different bars or something.

i went to emos to see tokyo police club.
they were cool, but alot of their songs sounded the same.
had a good time and I tried to take pics with my new old 35mm konica
but apperently the shutter speed was off for flash shots so nothing came out.
o. and they did a cool cover friends of p, which i hear they do often.
neato.
the whigs played there and they have a good old school rock sound to them.
i also talked to the girl from the boxing lesson, said i was sorry for missing them play.
they opened. i bought the other albums of theirs that i didn't already have.
i'm going to have to catch them play again sometime.

Tokyo Police Club contributed to a Rentals tribute album a wile back, so I guess there still running with that.

Last week I saw the Silver Jews, and I very happy to say to I am glad that they finally decided to start touring. They sounded amazing even when some drunk fan picked up a guitar and started playing the same cords over and over again like a dumb ass.

drunk fan guitar playing is the best.
I got to see Stereolab. good show.
played some new stuff and some oldies.
also got to see belaire and voxtrot. great!
also got to see shooter jennings and drive by truckers. which was good, but not my kind of music.
but a friend got me in free so i'm not complaining.

I saw Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band on Monday it was a great show, my knee felt like it was about to pop out of its socket from all the toe tapping. Opening bands where
Dirty Charlie who is a local Satanic Country band, if you go to his MySpace I recommend listening to Black Yodal #1. The other opening band was some dude named Keegan, who I think the only reason he was there was because he was a friend of the owner of the venue.

went to see willie nelson last week.
going to pick up the pictures right now.
plus some mom was trying to pick me up for her daughter.
had something to do with a champion rollerskating figure skater who wanted to be a sports broadcaster.
i was like. uh huh.
think they were drinking more than i was.
nice to see i'm doing well in the 40-50 year old mom demographic though.

Got to see Belaire again before they went on tour for their show on 10/30.
they had an italian horror music night. it was super awesome.
my favorite picks were the song from zombie (I think zombie III in europe)
and of course they finished off with the theme from suspiria.
which was super kick ass.

and last week I got to see the inifinite partials wheel into san antonio,
great show. but I was one of the few people that showed up.
the turn out for music in san antonio makes me sad.
but they had their new album so I picked that up.
aly tadros opened for them, good songwriter and strong voice,
almost reminds me of regina spektor.
I went back and forth to see Los #3 dinners, Blowing trees, and finally
saw buttercup wrap up the night.
I got pictures but they came out bad, still getting used to the new camera I just got.
35mm photography is so cool.
(and expensive)

I went to Fun Fun Fun Fest ans saw quite a few bands obviously. Deerhoof, Tim Fite, Yacht, Dead Milkmen, Bad Brains, DOA, Revival Tour, Clap Your Hand Say Yeah, St. Vincent, and the Annuals. Besides Tim Fite, and the Annuals I would recommend looking anything up that you don't know.

Checking out the people in the Revival Tour is something I recommend if your into Country/Punk, I sat threw there 3 hour show in Lubbock, and then went and did it again in Austin.

Yeah there bass player committed suicide, which from what I understand couldn't even play the bass anymore because of some sort of hand injury. The issue with the bass players hand, was kind of the reason they broke up in the first place.

I saw In Flames, Gojira, & 36 Crazyfists at Terminal 5 in NYC. actually I missed 36 Crazyfists because I was too busy drinking at a bar a few blocks away. Loud, Metal, Crazy. my ears still haven't recovered.
