I think about way back around 2000 before i was a regular poster on matt sharp boards and compare that with nowadays. Back then there was mystery and intrigue and I feel this wasn't just because matt sharp had hidden for so long in a cave. At the time, U felt intrigue over music. All the bands I liked at the time had active message boards and just a buzz around them. Today, bands must prove themselves over and over and even if they do prove themselves there are 1,000's of other bands out there and we have more easy access to them than ever. While I'm sure it's a small thing in comparison with the rest that is going on in the world, to me this change over means a lot. I could be wrong, but I think we have seen the end of huge bands with religious-like followings (unless the internet goes away or people just quit being in bands on a mass scale)

yea, over the past few years it seems like there's a whole lot more of a variety and
selection of real good music. my only problem was keeping up with it.
since i don't have a full time job anymore it's hard to come up with funds to go out
to shows every week and picking up music. I'm not sure if it's a bad thing having
so much to choose from that's of good quality, but it's nice to know if i'm looking for a good
show i never really have to wait too often before a good band rolls through town.

Well it kind takes a while for a band to create a large cult like fan base, all the current popular bands haven't been around that long. I think you might want to give it some more time before you throw in the towel. And the competition could possibly be good for the quality of music, all that means is that bands are going have to be that much better to get noticed.
