How many of you here have heard of Moog Cookbook?
A duo consisting of Brian Kehew and Roger Manning, their specialty lies in giving existing songs synthesized makeovers.
Their 1995 self-titled debut consists of 10 alternative rock songs of the decade made over for old vintage gear, not just synthesizers by Moog and other companies, but also stuff like the Wurlitzer electric piano, the Hohner Clavinet, the Hammond organ and even the Farfisa.
One famous example is their rendition of Green Day's "Basket Case" which has been so made over it now has a late '70s/early '80s sound, like a TV show theme (not to mention the similarity in riffs in places to that of the Doobie Brothers' "What a Fool Believes"):
Their rendition of Weezer's "Buddy Holly" has turned the song into bouncy parade music:
Hearing these renditions makes me think either the Moog Cookbook should cover a Rentals song ("Friends of P" and/or "Waiting"), seeing as the Moog was the Rentals' specialty, or the Rentals should do some of their own stuff Moog Cookbook-styled, or hopefully both.
I also think they could do a spaced-out rendition of the Who's 1967 album
The Who Sell Out.
